Illegal races are well known in the
underground world which involves mostly people from 17-40 years old. This
illegal activity has started for a long time ago among the teenagers and adults
in Malaysia. Usually we can watch it during weekend normally started from 12-3
a.m. It is also happens usually at the place where there is a long straight
road where bikers and drivers can test their vehicles’ top speed among each
other.
This unhealthy activity causes harm to
the surveillances around the area where the race is held because these people
are racing using the public road and dangerously overtaking the public who is
also using the same road. Many accidents happened between the racers and
surveillances during weekend. Thus, this issue has gotten the attention from
the authorities and they have made a solution for this problem; organizing a
legal race.
The first activity that we can take is
the Petronas Cubprix Racing sponsored by Petroliam Nasional Berhad. This is the
biggest event that people know where normal people can take part in the
privateer race. There are also other categories that people can take part but
it must be in the sponsored team. This race helped in reducing the number of
illegal race but not that much. The problem for this event is it cost much
money as a bike will cost nearly RM30,000 for one bike. Thus it is a problem
for a low budget team to enter the race.
Therefore, another effort is taken to
solve this problem. Selangor Motor Race (SMR) is organized for those teams that
only have low budget but still interested to take part in any motorsport race.
This event is held all over the place in Malaysia that has a track available
for race such as Usj (Subang), Ayer Keroh (Melaka), Dato Sagor (Perak) Pekan
(Pahang) and many more. This event got the support from many teams and sponsors
as people can enter the race with low budget.
The latest one is the race where it is
organized by following the style of the most dangerous race in the world. TT
Isle Race. This race is built by using the public road closed to make the
track. This race will be held on 13th -14th April 2013.
As Malaysia also has the public road with tricky and challenging corners like
Cameron Highland, Kuala Kelawang and many more, the organizer can follow the
style of TT Isle Race. This race also got the attention from citizen of
Malaysia. Every bike from 100-1000cc can enter the race.
Thus, all of these efforts are done to
reduce the rate of illegal race in Malaysia. Instead, it can also enhance the
talent of Malaysia’s citizen and gives the opportunity to the person who can
move on to the international level. The clear example is Zulfahmi Khairuddin,
the Moto3 rider from Malaysia who was also a ‘mat rempit’ during his teenager’s
life. It is hoped that these efforts can help to change the citizen of Malaysia
especially the teenagers.
